Drop in Club Resort and Spa

Resort Overview

book Drop In Club Resort and Spa

From 1,600 THB

The Drop in Club Resort and Spa is one of the most popular places to stay for the Full Moon Party. It is an attractive resort with swimming pool and good facilities that is conveniently located near the famous party beach of Haad Rin Nai as well as near all the bars, shops and restaurants of Haad Rin town. If you are looking for a bit more comfort than a hostel bunk bed and like a sociable atmosphere then Drop in Club Resort and Spa is a good option. However, recent reviews on Agoda and Trip Advisor make it clear that staying at Drop in Club Resort and Spa is neither a luxury experience nor is it a quiet one.

It is worth mentioning that Drop in Bar is one of the main venues for the Full Moon Party. The bar is at a different location to Drop in Club Resort. The bar is beachfront whereas the resort is next to Haad Rin lake. It is closer to the smaller and quieter Haad Rin Nai Beach (Sunset beach). See the map below.

♦ Accommodation Options at Drop in Club Resort

There are budget options as well as more expensive accommodation options at Drop in Club Resort. All the rooms are in accommodation blocks which are grouped around the resort pool. In total the resort has 160 rooms.

Backpacker Choice – The rooms are either double or twin beds. They have air-con, bathroom with hot water, TV, fridge and a kettle. The rooms are 18 square metres in size.

Pool View Room – These have balconies with a view over the communal swimming pool. The rooms have air-con, hot water bathroom, TV, fridge and kettle. The room size is 24 square metres.

Seaview Room – These rooms are on the other side of the building facing out to the sea. They have nice balconies to take the view and are a little less noisy because they don’t face the pool parties. Rooms are 24 square metres in size and contain air-con, hot water bathroom, TV, fridge and kettle.

Pool Side Villa – There are a few standalone villas next to the communal swimming pool. They have 36 square metres of interior space as well as another 18 sqwuare metres of terrace space. The villas have air-con, hot water, satellite TV, fridge and kettle.

Family Room – The family room has 1 double bed as well as twin beds. It can sleep up to 4 people. There is 66 square metres of living space. The rooms have hot water bathroom, air-con, satellite TV, fridge and kettle.

All the rooms have tiled floors and functional furniture. There are no attempts at interior design. Some of the rooms look a bit old and tired. No doubt the resort is coming to the end of its life cycle.

♦ Facilities

There is a large swimming pool that lies very much at the heart of the resort. Next to the pool is a pool bar and restaurant. The restaurant serves the usual selection of Thai food and Western standards such as burgers, chips and pasta.

Free wi-fi is available throughout the resort. It is often a bit slow as the bandwidth can be spread a bit thin. There is also an internet café where you can pay an hourly rate to go online using their computers.

The resort also has an area set aside for a gym and spa. The gym has a few treadmills and exercise machines. The spa offers Thai massage, oil massage and aromatherapy massage.

The resort also has a small mini-mart on its grounds where guests can buy a small range of items such as cigarettes, suntan lotion and frisbees. There is also a laundry service, taxi service and the reception is open 24/7.

♦ Pool Parties

For the days leading up to the big event of the FMP and for a few days after the party there are pool parties. DJs play dance music and classic anthems throughout the afternoon. Sometimes the parties are well attended and other times guests prefer to hang out on the beach or in town. Sociable party goers often enjoy this set up and stay at Drop in Club Resort and Spa primarily for the chance to party and get to meet new people. Those who like quiet afternoons and perhaps a snooze after lunch will be disappointed. The quieter rooms are the sea view ones which do not overlook the pool.

The pool party the day before the FMP is particularly loud and features foam falling into the pool.

♦ Review

The guest reviews Agoda and Trip Advisor are poor. At the time of writing Trip Advisor rated the hotel as #89 out of 90. Agoda rates the hotel as 3.8 out of 10 and euphemistically describes this rating as ‘acceptable’.

In 2017 the Trip Advisor ranking improved by one position to 88 out of 91 hotels in Koh Phangan and the Agoda rating dropped to 3.7.

There are a number of reasons for the poor reviews. First the resort is old and could do with a complete refurbishment. Many of the rooms could do with deep cleaning and new mattresses. The air-con units need their filters cleaned and the plumbing needs an overhaul. Years of party goers with fluoro paint, drunken stumbling and indoor smoking habits have taken their toll on the establishment. The same is true of the pool – years of parties has left it in a less than ideal state.

For many people the cheap price of the resort made up for its inadequacy. However, as room quality has gone down and room rates up the sense of getting a bargain has been reduced. Moreover, the staff at the resort come under fire from reviewers for being indifferent to guests.

As well as being cheap, this resort is that is ideally located near both Haad Rin beaches and just 5 minutes’ walk from the Full Moon Party. For this reason, despite all the problems, the Drop in Club Resort is normally fully booked out for the Full Moon Part period.
