Guide to Restaurants in Haad Rin

This is not an exhaustive list of all the places to eat and drink in Haad Rin. That would require a magazine. These are restaurants that have caught our eye, for good and bad reasons, and that we feel inclined to mention. Some of the restaurants on the list are long-established restaurants with lots of reviews of Trip Advisor, others are recent pop-ups, sure to be replaced by another business.

You can find Thai, Israeli and Italian food in Haad Rin. But more than that you can get a chicken sandwich or a burger on any street corner. Eating in Haad Rin is a very different affair to eating in Srithanu. This is not hippy, soul food ghetto of restaurants. Chips, grease, chicken, pizza and cheap Thai food are the main options in Haad Rin. You over-indulge on booze the night before and then soak it up with an English breakfast followed by deep fried chicken and then you might as well nip to the 7-11 for a cold beer to get you in the mood.

We include Trip Advisor snippets when available.

Map

It is a virtual truism that all business start ups that rely on walk in trade are keen to be listed on Google Maps. It is just as true that if these businesses fail they invariably also fail to mention this to Google Maps. So don’ t take the map as gospel.

Om Ganesh

Om Ganesh

Om Ganesh has been around for donkey’s years. It was the first Indian restaurant in Koh Phangan. Many believe it is still the best. Om Ganesh has a large menu offering lots of Indian favourites. They also make their own naan bread and cook their own tandoori meats. There’s plenty of gluten free options as well.

Burrito Hut

Burrito Hut

New place offering Mexican classics including burritos. The menu has vegetarian and vegan options. The restaurant has moved recently. The Trip Advisor listing still reads ‘Baan Tai’. It should be Haad Rin. The restaurant is near Sunrise Beach and the Cactus Bar. Ideal, really.

Chicken Corner

Chicken Corner

Chicken Corner is very much self-explanatory. It is a fried chicken shop located on a corner in the town. This is a favourite fast food and late night munchy spot for lots of Haad Rin devotees. Indulge your fried chicken cravings or have a burger or sandwich. Naturally they also sell beer, soft drinks and water.

Fellini Ristorante

Fellini Ristorante

This is a popular pizza restaurant in Haad Rin. They serve a wide range of pizzas as well as pasta dishes. Pizza prices vary between 150 Thai Baht and 200 Thai Baht. There are a couple of tables and chairs outside and plenty more inside.

Green Peach Restaurant

Green Peach Restaurant

Green Peach is a fairly new restaurant for Haad Rin. There is a large open space at the front of the restaurant with an imposing awning. Green Peach does everything – Thai food, burgers, Israeli food, seafood and Italian food. This place is not going to win any awards for gastronomic excellence but it is cheap (Thai food from 50 Thai Baht). Moreover, there is plenty of seating space.

Ladino Restaurant

Ladino Restaurant

Ladino Restaurant is another cheap restaurant that offers a bit of everything on the menu. They have Thai, Japanese and Italian options. This restaurant has good reviews. People are impressed with the Massaman curry and the duck curry. The owners work hard and provide good service.

The restaurant is composed of 2 shop units that have been made into one space. There is seating for about 20 people.

Lazy House Restaurant

Lazy House Restaurant

This restaurant is the large communal area for Lazy House Guesthouse. It is a cheap backpacker spot where they have dorms. The best part of the guesthouse is their restaurant. It is more than a restaurant. It is a place to relax. There are loads of sofas, cushions and low seating. There is table service so you can nurse your hangover with milkshakes, burgers, sandwiches, Thai food or a greasy English breakfast without having to get up. And best of all they show movies all day long. What’s not to like?

Lucky Crab Restaurant

Lucky Crab Restaurant

Lucky Crab Restaurant is a big open plan space. You can sit in the shade and look out at the passing traffic. Inside there is a concrete floor with heavy wooden tables and chairs. This is very much a traditional style restaurant. They focus on seafood. They have a wide selection of fresh fish including barracuda, snapper and shark. They will cook it using Thai recipes or just grilled.

They also do breakfast. The down side of the Lucky Crab appears to be the staff. When you have more ‘terrible’ ratings than ‘excellent’ ratings you should think about improving service. Just a thought.

Mama’s Schnitzel

Mama's Schnitzel

For those not familiar with a schnitzel, it is German/Austrian food. It is pork in breadcrumb deep fried. And it is delicious, if a bit naughty. For those not keen on pork there is also chicken sandwiches as well as burgers. Mama’s also does a mean tofu burger.

Reviews are good for Mama’s Schnitzel. The service is quick and they are open 24 hours a day. Not the cheapest place to eat in Haad Rin but a good option for those looking for non-Thai food.

Mango

Mango

Mango is a fairly new restaurant in Haad Rin. It stands out because of its striking yellow and black decor. However, the menu doesn’t. It is another burger and sandwich place. They also sell shakes and juices. There is shady seating inside. ‘Mango’ as a restaurant name seems in vogue at the moment. There is a Mango Restaurant in Chaloklum, and the Buri Rasa in Thong Nai Pan Noi has decided to call its restaurant ‘Mango’.

Matt’s Joint Grill

Matt's Joint Grill

Matt’s Joint Grill is a smart looking restaurant on a busy corner in Haad Rin. They serve a wide variety of Thai and Western dishes as well as ‘grill’ dishes. Every night they fire up the grill at 6.30 pm for their famous eat-as-much-as-you-want BBQ buffet. For grilled meat lovers this is a date for the dairy.

Opening times for Matt’s Joint Grill are 10 am to 11pm. They also do a delivery service and a takeaway service.

Monnalisa Pizza and Pasta

Monnalisa Pizza and Pasta

Monnalisa is one of the best restaurants in Koh Phangan according to Tripadvisor. This is an Italian restaurant that for several years has been satisfying customers with its homemade pizzas and delicious pasta dishes. If you are keen on Italian food then this is the place to go for dinner in Haad Rin.

They also serve such sweet treats as creme brulle and tiramisu. Be warned this is not a cheap restaurant, and it’s not their fault the red wine is served cold – that’s the climate. Indeed, who thought it was a good idea to drink red wine in Thailand?

Mr K Chicken Corner

Mr K Chicken Corner

This is a small restaurant with wooden table and chairs inside. It sits about a dozen people at a time. It’s yet another fast food, fried chicken, burger and sandwich spot that opens long hours and caters for those looking for greasy protein fast. They also do Phad Thai for 50 Thai Baht and have a juice stand at the front looking out to the street.

My Friends Restaurant

My Friends Restaurant

My Friends Restaurant is an open plan restaurant with views out on to the street. There is seating for about 36 people. Above the counter and hanging from the ceiling are pictures of Thai and Asian dishes such as phad Thai, spring rolls, papaya salad and tomyam. These let you know from a distance what is on the menu. Shame the pictures don’t include the prices. These by the way are reasonable.

And yes, they also do a fried chicken sandwich with crinkle cut chips.

Paprika Mediterranean Restaurant

Paprika Mediterranean Restaurant

Paprika Mediterranean Restaurant is a medium-sized restaurant and bar that does Israeli food such as falafel, hummus, salad and kebab. The place has some good reviews. It is also an option if you are a vegetarian. This place does fries and chicken sandwiches but at least offers some healthier options.

Being an Israeli restaurant (the menu is in English and Hebrew), Paprika can be a sociable spot as well. Sometimes there is more drinking than eating going on.

Royal Tandoor Oven

Royal Tandoor Oven

This sounds like an Indian Restaurant but actually it is another fried chicken, burger, sandwich place. Is Haad Rin one of the unhealthiest places to eat in Thailand? It’s an open plan restaurant with tables and chairs in the shade looking out on to the street.
