Travel from Koh Samui To Koh Phangan

The Haad Rin Queen ferry has been running for over a decade and still it doesn’t have a website. Internet booking is out of the question. You might be able to go down to the pier at Haad Rin or Big Buddha and buy a ticket for the following day. The Haad Rin Express harks back to a golden age of Thailand travel where you just turn up and go; free of the need to book in advance, download the app or find a travel agent.

Taxis from Big Buddha Pier

Despite many attempts by the Thai Government to regulate taxi operators in Koh Samui, the majority of Koh Samui taxi drivers still refuse to use their meters. So negotiate the price before getting in the taxi. It isn’t cheap. Using a shred taxi or buying a ticket to travel in a minivan is a better choice.

Catching a Flight from Koh Samui Airport

Don’t expect the ferry to arrive exactly on time. If you are catching a flight allow plenty of time to transfer off Koh Phangan.

Service on the Haad Rin Queen

There are 2 boats plying this route. One is a small one that can hold 30 or 40 people. The other is much larger with 2 levels – one where the bags are stored and the other covered with wooden seats where people sit. Drinks, but not food, are sold on both boats.

Sea Sickness

The downside of the Haad Rin Queen is that it can get quite rough on the crossing. Smaller boats rock more than bigger boats such as the Raja Car Ferry or Lomprayah which leave from the main town of Thong Sala. Just after the Full Moon Party the Haad Rin Queen is full of people holding back the sick. It is a very unglamorous way to depart from the paradise island of Koh Phangan.
