Those pressed for time who want to squeeze in a Full Moon Party into their holiday itinerary will be interested in how to get from Koh Samui Airport to Haad Rin. Koh Samui Airport remains the closest air travel hub to the famous party. This post deals with the best way to get from the airport to the party town on Koh Phangan. The good news is that you can book transport for a big section of the journey online for a very reasonable price. Below I detail the legs of the journey and provide links for online ticket booking.

This form gives you a joint ‘van+ferry’ ticket all the way from the airport to Koh Phangan, currently at just 450 Thai Baht a person.

At the airport you will be met by a minivan that will take you and your luggage from Koh Samui Airport to Bangrak Pier in the north of Koh Samui. This saves time and money as you don’t have to wait for a taxi and then try and negotiate a reasonable price with the driver. Taxis in Koh Samui are notoriously expensive and for reasons better not discussed they refuse adamantly to ‘go on the meter’.

The minivan journey to Bangrak Pier takes about 15 minutes. Your baggage is unloaded and you are given a Seatran ferry ticket to Thongsala in Koh Phangan. The Seatran ferry is fast and reliable even in choppy waters. There is plenty of seating in the boat and a range of snacks and drinks are available.

The ferry crossing takes about 40 minutes.

For those considering this route here are the times available for the joint ticket:

  • Departs 7.30 Arrives 8.30 Price 450 THB
  • Departs 12.30 Arrives 13.30 Price 450 THB
  • Departs 16.00 Arrives 17.00 Price 450 THB

If you arrive later than 16.00 at Koh Samui Airport you will need to book accommodation in Koh Samui for the night as you will have missed the last ferries over to Koh Phangan.

Thongsala to Haad Rin

This part of the journey you cannot book online. Koh Phangan taxi drivers are keen to protect their livelihoods. This means you will struggle to get discounts even for groups travelling together. The cost per person for a shared taxi between Thongsala and Haad Rin is 150 Thai Baht.

As soon as you get off the Seatran ferry you will be met by ‘steerers’ who will lead you to a waiting shared taxi for Haad Rin. This is a covered pickup truck with 2 rows of benches in the back. Sometimes the luggage is put on the roof and sometimes in goes in the back with the passengers.

The shared taxis to Haad Rin from Thongsala usually fill up quickly so you won’t have to wait long. The driver picks up and drops off passengers for the short 10 minute journey. Tell the driver the name of your hotel, guest house or hostel and he will leave you at the doorstep.

This is by the far the easiest way to get from Thongsala to Haad Rin. You can rent scooters and jeeps in Thongsala as soon as you get off the ferry but we recommend taking your time if you are looking to rent a vehicle as the deals vary and forum boards are littered with travellers retelling horror stories of being held to ransom over damages. If you have just come for the party then you won’t need a hired vehicle as all the action is in Haad Rin.

Remember that most accommodation in Haad Rin has a minimum stay requirement of 4 or more nights during the party period.
